This is an Ars Technica article that beautifully summarizes the main problem of how internet providers implement usage-based billing in Canada. (I love Ars Technica by the way; it’s the best tech news site)
I tried watching the CRTC hearings today, but it was very slow-paced, and I liken Konrad von Finckenstein to a very quiet snail. However, it appears the CRTC is finally taking a stand against the internet duopolies all over Canada. Unfortunately, the ineffectiveness of the CRTC leads me to believe that, at best, these hearings will only prevent usage-based billing from getting worse. I would like to see a sweeping change in internet pricing, but this is unlikely.
Finally, for all you Canadian readers, be aware that, if you have not taken an interest in how much your internet costs, then you are probably overpaying by 200% or so. In our country, where the internet should practically be a right, we are falling behind because of internet providers like Bell and Rogers. Get involved, because this issue has become another stunning example of how apathetic Canadians are to the issues that matter most.
